TUAHOF mourn the passing of HOF member Dr. Rudy Deveaux

Hall of Fame member Dr. Rudy Deveaux.

Dr. Eneas Ruel (Rudy) Deveaux, HOF Class of 2017, passed away on Sunday December 3, 2023, in Atlanta, GA.  The Tuskegee Athletic Hall of Fame (TUAHOF) offer our sincere condolences and prayers to his wife Dr. Hermia Simmons Deveaux and daughter Kennedy.

Dr. Deveaux was a valuable member of the HOF serving as Chair of the Scholarship Committee and always supporting the HOF since his induction.

Dr. Deveaux was a proud and distinguished Tuskegee University graduate and supported Mother Tuskegee through several organizations.

Lula Bell Smith (TUAHOF 1989) 90th Birthday Celebration planned

The family of Mrs. Lula Bell Smith is planning her 90th Birthday celebration in Florida on August 12th, 2023.

Mrs. Smith set records at Tuskegee as a basketball and track star. She graduated from Tuskegee in 1957 and was inducted into the Tuskegee University Hall of Fame in 1989 (view TUAHOF BIO).

Leon Crenshaw, Jr., TUAHOF 2007, pass away

Leon Crenshaw, Jr. transitioned on Monday, July 29, 2023. Mr. Crenshaw resided in Detroit, Michigan and was a member of the Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame Class – Class of 2007.

Mr. Crenshaw was a graduate of Tuskegee University. Crenshaw;  an outstanding defensive lineman and was First team All-SIAC Football in 1989 and 1990. Professionally, he was an  educator.

TUAHOF acknowledge the Crenshaw family and offer our sincere condolences and prayers.

TUAHOF Class of 2023 Announced

Tuskegee, AL – The Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of eight nominees for Enshrinement into the Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame. 

The 2023 Enshrinement Weekend events are scheduled for September 15-16, 2023.

To capture the enshrinement event and provide support to inductees and the Hall of Fame mission, a souvenir journal will be prepared. The souvenir journal will allow family, friends, colleagues; and the business community to acknowledge the honoree’s achievements and to express appreciation for the many ways they have touched your life.

The eight inductees selected for HOF Class of 2023 are:

Ernie James Montgomery – Class of 1969 – Team Manager & Scorekeeper
Edwin Jay Grimmett– Class of 1979 – Football

Inductees were selected from nominations received by Dec. 31, 2022.

The Selection Committee evaluate nominations based on the following criteria:

 

    • Made exceptional contributions to the sport(s) they are being nominated by earning at least one letter and other awards appropriate to the sport.

    • Direct, consistent and current financial support to university within 5 years prior to the submission of application.

    • Graduate of Tuskegee University or graduate of some other university
      (4-year degree) for at least 10 years prior to nomination.

    • Demonstrated leadership qualities through professional accomplishments.

    • Community service exhibited.

Evelyn Lawler Lewis, member of TUAHOF Class of 1985, pass away

Evelyn Lawler Lewis, Tuskegee HOF Member, co-founder of the Willingboro Track Club and mother of track and field legends Carl and Carol Lewis, died on Tuesday January 3rd in Willingboro, NJ.

She caught the eye of Major Cleve Abbott, the athletic director at Tuskegee Institute, and with his help she became the first in her family to go to college.

At Tuskegee, Evelyn Lawler studied to be a physical-education teacher and she ran the hurdles. Also at Tuskegee, Evelyn met and married William McKinley Lewis Jr., football player, sprinter and long jumper who was studying to be a teacher. In 1951, the year she graduated, Evelyn made the team that went to the first Pan American Games, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she finished sixth in the 80-meter hurdles.

She was a member of the Tuskegee University Hall of Fame, Class of 1985.

The deadline for submitting a nomination was 12/31/2023.

Nominations postmarked by December 31, 2022 will considered for the TUAHOF Class of 2023.

The Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to give lasting recognition to those who have brought distinction to themselves and Tuskegee University through their achievement, commitment, support, and leadership in athletics. Since the initial class in 1974, another 26 classes of inductees have joined the Athletics Hall of Fame and there are now 305 individuals that have been honored.
